Below you will find a curated list of links to image resources. Where possible we've included links to rights and usage information for each resource. Creative Commons (CC) images are noted.

Medical and Science Images







UCSF Images

These sites will help you find UCSF brand-appropriate imagery of UCSF people and locations.

  • UCSF Brand-Approved Photos - login through WebDam for UCSF images including portraits, environment/landscape photos, general imagery, and logos


Creative Commons & Public Domain Images

These sites are particularly useful for finding a wide variety of Creative Commons and Public Domain images.

  • Flickr - search by license, colors, pattern - searchable by reuse rights

  • Flickr Commons - a subsite of Flickr focused on library image collections with many historical photos

  • The Noun Project - a large archive of icons CC licensed and for purchase

  • Pixabay - images CC0 licensed for remixing and commercial use, see usage information, search by color
  • Wikimedia Commons - a wide variety of public domain images, possibly useful for finding general medical images






  • Europeana - a database of imagery from collections in Europe, may be useful for finding historical medical imagery, searchable by reuse rights

  • Google Images Search - use Search tools to search by Usage rights



 Stock Images

These leading stock image sites have a selection of medical and scientific imagery.

  • Stocksy - a collective, fair pricing

Useful Tools

The following is a list of useful tools for finding and attributing images.

  • Photos for Class
    - find and download CC licensed Flickr photos with attribution included on download
  • PhotoPin - find and download CC images with HTML-based licenses for inserting in a blog

  • Reverse Image Search - TinEye and Google Images - find larger versions of an image or various uses of an image
